How to make a line graph

  1. 01

    Put the timeline in order

Arrange your dates or time labels before entering data. The chart uses the order of your data points.

  2. 02

    Add the measurements

Edit the example or import a table. Give each numeric series a clear name and use a consistent unit.

  3. 03

    Style the trend

Adjust line colors, points, labels and axes. Keep the legend visible when comparing multiple series.

  4. 04

    Export for your audience

Use an image for a report or presentation. Pro formats such as MP4 and GIF require an active trial or paid membership.

When a line graph helps

Regular reporting

Track monthly signups, visits or sales in chronological order.

Comparing trends

Put related series on the same timeline, using consistent units and clearly named lines.

Explaining a change

Use titles and labels to show where a rise or drop happened, and explain the context in your report.

Make the timeline easy to interpret

  • Keep dates in chronological order; the editor does not automatically sort your observations.
  • Use evenly spaced time intervals. The horizontal axis treats labels as categories, so irregular gaps need an explanation.
  • Do not replace a missing observation with zero unless zero is the actual measured value.
  • Use straight lines when precise point-to-point changes matter; smooth curves can suggest values between observations.

Frequently asked questions

Does the chart automatically sort dates?

No. Arrange the observations in the intended order before importing, or reorder the data in the editor. The line follows the order of the data points.

Can I compare multiple lines?

Yes. Add numeric series in the data editor or import them from a spreadsheet. Choose distinct colors and keep the legend names descriptive.

Are uneven time gaps shown to scale?

The horizontal axis uses category labels, so consecutive points are evenly spaced. Use regular time intervals or explain irregular gaps to avoid suggesting equal elapsed times.

Can I choose smooth or stepped lines?

Yes. The chart picker offers basic, smooth and stepped line variations. This page’s example opens a basic line chart with visible points.

Can I make and export charts for free?

Yes. Guests and free accounts can export PNG, JPEG and SVG within the current daily allowance. PDF, GIF, MP4 and interactive HTML require sign-in and an active trial or paid membership. See the pricing page for current limits and plans.

Is my chart data uploaded?

Spreadsheet parsing, chart editing and export rendering run in your browser. Saving a cloud template uploads its chart configuration and data to PeasyChart. Export authorization uses the server to check your allowance or membership.
